This course is all about developing your skills so you can successfully do a job you’re interested in. It focuses on IT and business, and you’ll spend quite a bit of time in the IT department. You’ll take part in lots of projects in areas which are meaningful and relevant to you. For example, it might be producing your own magazine, setting up your own travel agency or running a breakfast club at college – you choose what you want to do. Working in groups, these projects will help you: Become more independent in your life and work. Become a more confident communicator and able to ‘have your say’. Develop skills to make you more employable, like working with other people. Develop strategies to cope with different situations in the adult world, such as how to resolve conflict or meet the next challenge. Learn key personal skills like budgeting. Learn how to make the right decisions for the next stage in your life.
In everything you do, you’ll be developing your core skills like communication and numeracy, while preparing yourself to get ready for the world of work. Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing: Go on work experience, including local shops. Volunteer in the local community, such as Coastwatch. Develop your IT skills in Word, Excel and Spreadsheets. Learn how to use the internet safely. Develop skills in making PowerPoint presentations. Learn how to use IT more creatively, like games programming, multi-media and digital photography. Look at how a business works and investigate a Scottish business or industry. Take part in an “Apprentice” style competition. Go on lots of trips, such as Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
If you’ve completed the Connect to Careers course at college and are interested in IT, this course could be the way forward for you. It’s also a great next step if you have an additional support need and want to get ready either for employment or a course in the wider curriculum. You’ll come to college for 18 hours of learning a week, and achieve a qualification at SCQF Level 4.
