Modern Apprenticeships might be right for you if you prefer to learn from hands-on experience, and would prefer part time rather than full time study. Being able to earn while you learn is another plus point.
The Modern Apprenticeship in Aquaculture Management Technical is available at SCQF Level 9 (this is a technical level apprenticeship).
During this apprenticeship you would develop knowledge and skills about fin fish and shellfish, including feeding, disease and environmental needs, plus aspects of what is involved the management side of an aquaculture business.
Anyone living in Scotland who is over school leaving age can apply. Sometimes employers set an upper age limit, as the Scottish Government doesn’t always fund training for those aged over 24.
You would check this with individual employers.
For this technical level apprenticeship, you require a qualification in aquaculture at SCQF Level 7, such as the MA Aquaculture. You also need two years of experience in the industry.
You will achieve the relevant Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), Diploma or other competency based qualification. In addition, you work towards core skills and complete industry specific training.
This Technical Apprenticeship will take between 12-24 months to complete.
You could go on to study for a related degree, or be able to progress within the aquaculture management sector, perhaps managing one or a number of fish farms.
