Old Aberdeen Campus
Germany, Austria and Switzerland are all countries with a diverse and turbulent culture and history. In addition to studying German language, students will acquire a thorough understanding of past and current German culture, and its significance in the modern world.
German at Aberdeen has an outstanding reputation, top-rated for teaching, with broad, flexible and
diverse programmes covering language, literature, history and culture and many subject combinations. You’ll also have the opportunity to spend at least one semester abroad.
Single Honours in German Studies and most Joint Honours with German are available either as Mode A degrees (5 years) including a full academic year spent in a German-speaking country, or as Mode B degrees (4 years) including half a year spent in a German-speaking country. For both programmes the first and second year is identical, so you don't need to decide until the December of second year.
Year 1: All students will take a language and culture course appropriate to their current German skills – ‘beginners’ or ‘qualified’.
Year 2: Modern German Culture 3 and 4; Intensive language study at appropriate level.
Year 3: German Honours Language Study Abroad.
Years 4 and 5: German Language Study for Honours; Dissertation; Selection of specialised modules on culture and history.
