The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) is a one year (36 weeks) full-time course of professional training accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. It aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes which are necessary to prepare them as new secondary school teachers.

Entry Requirements

You must have a degree containing 80 SCQF credit points relevant to the teaching qualification, 40 of the credit points must have been studied at SCQF Level 8 or above. You must also have Higher English plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5.

Your degree must have included studying music over at least three years, and should include:

• the study of harmony, counterpoint, arrangement, orchestration and composition, with a broad study of music in social and historical contexts covering stylistic, structural and instrumental developments in traditional, ethnic and non-western musical cultures

•keyboard studies including sight-reading music, playing by ear, accompanying, harmonising and improvising in a variety of traditional and contemporary styles

•the study of an instrument or voice to an advanced standard. If you specialise in voice you will have to show some experience of an instrument other than a keyboard instrument. If your specialist study is an instrument you will have to show that you have some experience of solo singing or taking part in choral work. If the keyboard is your main instrument, you will have to show that you can play a second instrument.

You must meet the criteria of the first two points in all cases. If you do not meet all the criteria in the last point you may have to pass entrance exams in those areas where you do not meet the criteria.

You must be able to show us that you are familiar with and can use music technology.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.
