Content

This course provides an introduction to working with children and develops the skills, values and attributes required to study within the field of childcare. You will learn about the importance of play, child development, children’s rights and protection, how to support children with additional support needs, whilst working towards the completion of the National Progression Award Playwork and Childcare Award. You will take part in activities in and out of the classroom and undertake a short work placement.

You will study: Development and Wellbeing of Children and Young People; Working with Children and Young People; Children and Young People: Rights and Protection; Children and Young People: The Process of Play; Children and Young People: Practice of Play; Supporting Children with Additional Support Needs; First Aid; Core Skills: Communication, Numeracy and ICT.


This course incorporates NPA Playwork and Childcare.

Entry Requirements

4 subjects at National 4 including English; or Certificate: First Steps to a Career in Childcare; or Certificate: Practical Care Skills; or other relevant national qualifications at SCQF Level 4. Interview and written test.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.
