The University of Stirling is a modern university with an excellent reputation for research, teaching and the quality of the learning opportunities it provides. It is designated, by the Scottish Government, as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence.

The main campus is two miles outside Stirling city centre. The university is responsible for the teaching of nurses in the Forth Valley, Highlands and Western Isles so there are additional campuses in both Inverness and Stornoway (on the Isle of Lewis).

Courses and students

The university runs modular, flexible courses in around 220 subject combinations through five academic faculties:

Stirling is the only university in Scotland to offer degrees with a January start date in a range of subjects.

The university has agreements (formal and informal) with a number of further education colleges including Forth Valley College, enabling students to move from a specific HNC or HND to the second or third year of a degree programme. The university also offers degrees in Professional Education with Chemistry, Physics or Engineering in conjunction with Heriot-Watt University.

Students can also study abroad at partner universities in countries including China, Oman, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.

The university has around 14,000 students, with more than 120 nationalities represented on campus.

Facilities and Services

Facilities include a modern library with a dedicated Study Zone next to it, which is open 24 hours a day. In terms of accommodation, there are more than 2,500 residential places available across 20 residences.

The university has outstanding sporting facilities and is Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence. It is home to national swimming and tennis centres, as well as a golf course and a football academy. It also has a wide range of arts and leisure facilities including a theatre, cinema, bars and a nightclub.

The Highland Campus is situated in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital. Facilities for students are boosted by the Highland Health Sciences Library (which caters for students, staff and NHS employees).

The Western Isles Campus is situated in Western Isles hospital. The campus provides a modern, purpose-built learning centre. There are computer facilities, access to a purpose-built clinical skills centre, and a library. Free wi-fi access is also available and students have access to their own common room and kitchen facilities, a useful and relaxing space to spend time in.


The University of Stirling is ranked 3rd in the UK for Social Work courses and 2nd for Marketing in the Complete University Guide 2021.

In the Guardian University Guide 2020, Stirling is 2nd in Scotland for Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations.
