UHI Outer Hebrides (formally Lews Castle College UHI) is a partner college of the University of the Highlands and Islands. It offers over 100 full time and 100 part time courses to around 2,300 students across four campuses.

The main campus is located in Stornoway, with three local centres in Barra, Benbecula and North Uist. The college also delivers courses in Argyll and Lochaber and throughout the Highlands and Islands in partnership with other UHI colleges.

The college is home to the Outer Hebrides Care Academy. Working with a range of health and care providers, the aim is to develop a highly trained workforce for the future. A range of courses at all levels are offered.

Courses and subjects

There are courses in a range of qualifications, from introductory to degree and postgraduate level study. Vocational and industry qualifications are also available.

Courses are offered in the following subject areas: Business, Leisure and Tourism; Computing and IT; Creative Industries; Education and Childcare; Energy, Engineering and Construction; Gaelic Medium Studies; Health and Wellbeing; Humanities and Social Sciences; and, Science and Environment.

Facilities and services

The Stornoway Campus has a student common room with LCD TV and a refectory for snacks and drinks. There is also a childcare centre and self-catered student accommodation. All campuses are located within communities with good facilities such as sports centres, swimming pools, libraries and arts centres.

There is also a student services team, providing guidance on a range of issues, and the Student Association which is affiliated to the National Union of Students.

Specialisms

UHI Outer Hebrides offers a wide range of courses suitable for many career paths, but in taking advantage of the area’s culture and history, there are a number of specialist courses available for Gaelic, Highlands and Islands culture and literature, and Celtic studies.
