The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583, the last of the 4 ancient Scottish universities. It is now Scotland’s largest university and centre of academic excellence, ranked 4th in the UK for research power. It is also the home of the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA).

Courses and students

There are almost 400 degree programmes in 58 subjects on offer, taught through 21 academic schools in three colleges:

The university had over 45,510 students in 2020, including 26,785 full time undergraduate and 3,835 part time undergraduate students. International students made up 41% of these students. The university has over 7,600 academic staff.

There are more than 1,400 opportunities to study abroad across 300 different destinations.

Facilities and services

The university is home to a wide range of facilities including: one of the UK’s 10 Wellcome Trust research facilities; The Institute of Astronomy at the Historic Royal Observatory in Edinburgh; and The Hospital for Small Animals at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

The university is one of the UK’s leading sports universities. They have excellent facilities managed by the university’s Centre for Sport and Exercise. It includes extensive state-of-the-art gyms, a residential centre for outdoor activities, a swimming pool, widespread playing fields and a leading sports injuries clinic.

There are more than 60 different sports clubs to choose from, and clubs cater for all ability levels. Sport-specific coaches currently lead eight sporting activities: rowing, swimming, hockey, women’s fencing, archery, orienteering, men’s rugby, and women’s basketball.


The university is ranked 16th in the top 50 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

In the Complete University Guide 2022, Edinburgh University has: 32 subjects in the top ten; ranked 1st in the UK university league tables for Nursing; 2nd for both Education and Veterinary Medicine; and 4th for Asian Studies.
