This course is available in 4 or 5 year durations. As an integral part of the 4-year programme, you will spend half of year three developing your language skills as a teaching assistant or visiting student in a Spanish-speaking country. As an integral part of the 5 year degree, you will spend all the third year taking your language and cultural skills to a very high level as a language assistant or visiting student in a Spanish-speaking country.

Spanish & Latin American Studies at Aberdeen has an outstanding reputation and is top-rated for teaching. With a focus on Latin America, this five-year programme will develop your Spanish language skills and add in-depth knowledge of the literature, culture and history of the 19 Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. You will spend a full year in a Spanish-speaking country and gain the skills for a wide range of exciting careers.

Aberdeen is one of the most dynamic place to study and research the Spanish language and the cultural frameworks in countries where it is spoken. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language after English in the western hemisphere and is currently spoken by 350 million native Spanish speakers including 19 Latin American countries. Not only is it the second language in many parts of the USA, but Spanish is also the fastest growing modern language in the UK.

You will grow your skills in Spanish - whether starting as a beginner or advanced - and you will explore the history, films, visual culture, literature and politics of Latin America, taught by experts internationally recognised as leaders in their fields. As an integral part of your degree, you will spend all the third year of your five-year degree taking your language and cultural skills to a very high level as a language assistant or visiting student in a Spanish-speaking country. For the four-year degree option, you would spend half of year three abroad.

2024 entry requirements:

Standard entry:
4 Highers at AABB (by end of S5) plus English at National 5. Those with Highers at BBB by end of S5 are encouraged to apply.

Entry to year 2 may be possible with 3 Advanced Highers at ABB including Spanish at A.

Widening access entry:
2 Highers at BB (by end of S5). Additional Highers/Advanced Highers in S6.
