The one-year programme is the Scottish route to qualified teacher status. We aim to prepare you for the range of roles that teachers are expected to play: a competent, reflective classroom practitioner; a collaborator who contributes to the wider informal curriculum of the school; a subject specialist and curriculum developer; and a teacher in society, whether building strong relationships with parents or contributing to national policy debates.

The 36-week secondary programme is divided equally between University- based and school-based activities.

Campus activities will include lectures and workshops, with a focus on student-centred learning in a multidisciplinary setting. School activities will include observation and analysis of teaching and learning, through to developing and implementing your own teaching practice.

Entry Requirements

For the first language offered you must have a degree containing 80 SCQF credit points in the language you want to teach, 40 of the credit points must have been studied at SCQF Level 8 or above. You must also have Higher English plus Maths or Applications of Maths at National 5 at B.

You must have lived for 6 months in a country where the language you want to teach is spoken before starting the course, and prove that you are competent in speaking the language.

For second and subsequent languages you must have a degree containing 80 SCQF credit points in the second language you want to teach, 40 of the credit points must have been studied at SCQF Level 8 or above.

You must have lived for 3 months in a country where the second language you want to teach is spoken before starting the course, and prove that you are competent in speaking the language.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need.
