The eight modules provide a broad introduction to engineering and biomedical technology with a mix of theoretical, analytical and practical content underpinned by mathematics for engineers and professional skills. Key subject areas include statics, dynamics, design and manufacture. Professional skills and product development is hands-on and includes group mini-projects.
Depth in understanding and application of mechanical principles is developed along with an introduction to design and analysis software and procedures. This is supported by mathematics and an appreciation of the integration of engineering, technology, business and sustainability.
Having gained core mechanical engineering skills in the first two years, the emphasis in year 3 is on biomedical technology with a deepening in instrumentation and control and engineering analysis. Knowledge of quality control and regulations is introduced and applied via a group project to integrate knowledge gained into biomedical products.
Key to year 4 is the double-weighted individual project on a topic of your own choice (in a relevant area and subject to academic approval). Technical depth and breadth is developed through engineering analysis, simulations, failure analysis, biosensors, signal processing and control.
Stage 5 (fast-track) wraps around year 4, and is split over the summers before and after. Central to stage 5 are the two summer placements in a relevant industrial environment. Block taught modules on advanced technical and engineering-managerial subjects complete the master’s level.
2021 entry requirements:
4 Highers at BBBB (CCCC for widening access entry) including Maths and Engineering Science, Physics or another technological subject plus National 5 English and Biology (if not held at Higher).
