Chief Mate/Master (Post HND)

This course lets you progress to the Chief Mates and Master level and achieve the relevant (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.

This flexible course is designed for students who have successfully completed a Scottish Professional Diploma in Nautical Science in the UK and have accrued at least 12 months of sea service after obtaining their OOW UK COC (Unlimited).

You'll study: MCA/SQA Written Examination preparation; MCA Oral Examination preparation; NAEST Management; HELM Management.

Entry Requirements

HND Nautical Science. Recognised sea time of 12 months at OOW level. STCW Certificate in Medical Care On Board (Medical Care is required before the candidates take their MCA Oral examination). NAEST Operational Certificate.

Progression Routes

The course will equip you with the skills to become a competent and efficient Chief Mate. You will require a total of 36 months ‘watch-keeping service’ while holding an OOW Unlimited II/I COC to undertake your next examination for Master (Unlimited) COC. This period may be reduced to 24 months if at least 12 months of such seagoing service has been served as Chief Mate while holding a Chief Mate unlimited, II/2, Certificate of Competency.
