This course is designed to provide students with essential skills and knowledge that are relevant to working in a health care environment. The course also provides a placement which integrates practice with the theory and knowledge you are learning on the course. It is a challenging and demanding programme which includes the study of two Higher qualifications.
The course will increase your understanding of a variety of care contexts and services users in order to effectively prepare you for further study or employment.
Throughout the course students can consider a range of employment options available to them upon successful completion, including Health Care Support Worker roles within the NHS, other statutory health care opportunities and various care roles in the private and voluntary sectors.
This course covers a broad range of subjects, providing you with an in-depth understanding of the principles and practice of care. You will learn about HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, the prevention of infection and how to care for those with dementia.
You will also explore biology and anatomy, as well as sociology and psychology for care. Throughout the course you will develop important skills in literacy and numeracy, whilst completing Care and Psychology Highers. The work placement will allow you to gain valuable hands on experience in preparation for further study or employment.
1 Higher plus 3 subjects at National 5, one of which should be a science, ideally Biology. A genuine aptitude for working with people and good communication skills are essential. You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of course.
