School leaving dates

Article Image

In Scotland you can only leave school legally at one of two official school leaving dates, which apply to all pupils.

  1. 31 May if your 16th birthday falls between 1 March and 30 September
  2. the last day of term in December if your 16th birthday falls between 1 October and the end of February.

It is possible for pupils who are due to leave in December to spend their last term (August - December) at college or on an extended work experience placement if their school agrees that this is the best option.
