Skillseekers
What is Skillseekers?
Skillseekers is a training programme for young people aged 16-19.
It aims to help you get the training, skills and qualifications that will improve your job prospects, now and in the future.
During your training you work towards a recognised qualification, a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 2.
You can be in a full time job or, if you don’t have a job, you apply for a training place with an employer.
During 2010, Modern Apprenticeships at SVQ Level 2 are replacing Skillseekers.
What’s involved?
You can train in over 80 different types of work – from sales to social care.
Training usually takes around one year, but can vary depending on your needs and progress.
Your training usually has three parts:
- part-time study or training (which may be at a college or training centre)
- work-based assessments
- practical experience on-the-job.
You develop a Training Plan with your employer and training provider, and your progress is reviewed regularly.
You may be able to move on to a Modern Apprenticeship at SVQ Level 3. This is roughly equivalent to Highers.
Will I get paid?
· Yes! If you’re an employee you get the going rate for the job.
· If you’re a trainee you get a training allowance of at least £55 a week.
· Your training comes free as part of the package.
