Day event - In October 1641, the native Irish Catholics of Ulster rose in rebellion. They unleashed their frustrations and fears on the Scots and English Protestant settlers in their midst. While the scale and nature of the violence is hotly debated, the rising of 1641 still resonates powerfully in the cultural memory of both Catholic and Protestant communities. On the 360th anniversary of this pivotal moment in the troubled history of Ireland's relations with its neighbours, this day school will attempt to cast new light on the origins of the rising, its course, and its wider consequences. Drawing on eye witness accounts, we will look at the rising from the viewpoint of Irish, Scots and English.
