ACAS
The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service. A public body founded in 1974 and funded by tax payers. Established to prevent and resolve problems in the workplace.Experts in industrial relations.

Adult Literacies
The ability to read and write and use numbers in order to handle information, express ideas and opinions, make decisions and solve problems.

AGCAS
The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) is the professional association of careers professionals in Higher Education.

APL
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
is the term used for the award of credit on the basis of demonstrated learning that has occurred at some time in the past. This learning may have come about as the result of a course, or self-directed study, or as the result of experience either at work or in leisure pursuits. See APEL.

Apprenticeship
A specific period of time, normally 3 or 4 years, combining on-the-job training and work experience while in paid employment, with formal off-the-job training. The apprentice enters into a contract of training or training agreement with an employer.
