This is a list of the most common words or phrases used to describe the Top Twenty skills that employers value.

For each word or phrase rate yourself on the following scale:

  1. This is a definite strength
  2. I'm as good as most
  3. There's room for improvement

Communication: speaking, writing, listening and understanding
Interpersonal skills: being able to get along well with people and to understand their feelings
Honesty: being truthful and trustworthy
Teamwork: working with others to get something done
Critical thinking:challenging, proposing alternatives, asking questions to clarify something or understand it better
Using your initiative or being self-motivated: doing things without having to be told, working without supervision
Dependable: being the kind of person others can count on, meeting deadlines and closing date, being punctual
Flexible: being able to adapt to changing circumstances and events
Leadership: the ability to take charge, manage and motivate others
Analytical and research skills: gathering information, looking at a situation from various angles and identifying key issues
Respond to pressure: handle deadlines and time scales, think on your feet, deal with difficult customers
Creative: using your imagination to come up with something new or off the wall or to solve a problem
Influencing: being able to persuade others to consider or adopt a different point of view
Organisational skills: planning, being methodical, setting goals you can achieve, managing your time effectively
Problem solving: analysing the causes of a problem and coming and coming up with a solution
Computing skills: competence in using software and the Internet
Attention to detail: being accurate in all aspects of a task, however small
Numeracy: using numbers to learn more about something or to answer questions
Seeing the big picture: not getting caught up in the small details of a situation and missing its wider significance
Willingness to learn: open to new ideas and ready to learn new ways of working
