  • The National Film and Television School website lists courses which may be relevant.

Getting On

  • Most directors are freelance and work on short-term contracts for cable and satellite broadcasters, or for independent TV and film production companies.

  • Some start up their own projects and get funding for them through Scottish Screen or other film agencies.

Pay

The figures below are only a guide. Actual salaries may vary, depending on:

  • where you work

  • the size of company or organisation you work for

The details are for film or TV directors at the start of their career.
Assistant directors on salaries earn between £17,000 and £30,000 a year. Some directors work for little or no pay but will share in any profit the film makes. Senior directors may earn over £50,000 a year. The BECTU website gives an idea of the kind of salary to expect.

More Information

The Network scheme which is part of the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival provides opportunities for those genuinely interested in a television career to gain experience in front of and behind the camera and to make useful contacts.

First Light - an initiative to help young people to realise their potential by getting involved in digital film and media projects. They fund and inspire film projects with five to 19-year-olds throughout the UK. Log on at http://www.firstlightonline.co.uk/.
