Administrative assistants or officers (courts) do clerical and support work to make sure that Justice of the Peace (JP) Courts, District Courts, Sheriff Courts, the Court of Session and the High Court run smoothly.
The Work
You could be:- attending court sessions to help and advise on procedure
- setting the dates and times and allocating courtrooms for court cases
- preparing papers for court and writing up minutes
- answering enquiries from the public at a reception desk or on the phone
- calling jurors for cases
- issuing court orders
- handling warrants, summonses and pieces of evidence
- occasionally dealing with members of the public who are angry, rowdy or upset
- working out and collecting legal fees.
Conditions
- Court staff are civil servants who work for the Scottish Courts Service.
- You would normally work in an office and occasionally in the court.
- Working hours are usually 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
Getting In
- The Civil Service has nationality requirements - you must be a UK national, Commonwealth citizen or national of the European Economic Area.
- For entry as an administrative assistant, you need a number of Standard grades at level 3 or above, or the equivalent, including English and a subject showing competency with figures such as maths or finance.
- You may be able to move into court work from other civil service posts.
- Mature entrants with relevant or previous administration experience will be at an advantage.
- About 1,000 staff work for the Scottish Court Service.
What Does It Take?
You need to be:- able to work quickly and accurately under pressure
- well organised
- methodical
- reliable
- tactful and polite when dealing with members of the public.
You need to have:- respect for confidential information
- good spoken and written English
- good IT skills
- a good eye for detail.
Training
- Training is mainly on-the-job
- You can also do short specialist courses.

With experience and further skills, you may be able to move on to other jobs within the Civil Service.
