An institutional manager ensures that places such as residential homes, nursing homes and university and college residences are kept clean and well maintained.
The Work
You could be:- hiring and supervising staff and organising staff training
- making up staff rotas
- making sure accommodation is clean and properly maintained
- arranging laundry services and linen supplies
- working with catering staff to plan menus
- organising contractors to maintain the building
- planning the budget, taking payments from residents, settling bills and making sure the accounts balance
- giving information, advice and support to residents and their families and dealing with complaints.
Conditions
- You work irregular hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
- You might be on call sometimes while off duty.
- You might have to live-in on a part time or full time basis.
Getting In
You can enter institutional management in several ways.- A degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in hospitality management. Entry requirements for a degree course are usually 3-4 Highers and for an HND 1-2 Highers.
- A management trainee programme with part time study to do a relevant Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) or management qualification.
- Gaining experience in residential care work and then getting promotion to management.

- A driving licence may be essential.
There are opportunities all over Scotland in hospitals, universities and colleges, and residential homes. Although there are fewer residential homes nowadays for young people, the nursing home sector for elderly people is expanding.

- observant
- able to assess patient's care needs
- able to work within a budget
- patient to deal with those who are slow or confused
- skilled in IT and able to keep accurate records
- able to remain calm under pressure.
Training
While working you can study for SVQ Level 3 Hospitality Supervision or Level 4 Leadership and Management for Care Services.
Getting On
- After experience you could apply for promotion to a post as a regional manager in charge of a number of centres.
- You could also apply for management in the National Health Service (NHS) or in the private healthcare sector.
Pay

- the demand for the job.
Most applicants for institutional management jobs have several years of experience already. Pay can range from £17,000 to £40,000 a year. You may also get free accommodation or there may be a deduction for this.
