Art and Design

Interior Design or Display

‘The urge for good design is the same as the urge to go on living. ‘ (Harry Bertoia, Italian artist 1915-1978)
 A modern office

Display and design work is 3 dimensional art.

Interior designers work on interior layouts for offices, restaurants, hotels and up-market homes.  They are concerned with the interior decoration, the furniture and the accessories and aim to create a complete ‘look’. In the case of pubs, clubs and restaurants the decor may have to follow a particular national or interest-based theme.

Set designers design stage sets for theatre, film or television.

Display and exhibition designers create displays of goods for shops or exhibitions. They aim to make the display so attractive that members of the public buy the goods.

To work in this area you should be artistic, creative and imaginative with a good eye for colour and 3 dimensional design. You should be prepared to change your plans to suit your client’s ideas. You should also be able to accept criticism of your work.

A good business sense is helpful, as you may become self employed or work freelance.

You do not always need qualifications to get into work as a display designer or window dresser, although your chances are better if you do have one.

For the other jobs, you will need a qualification. As well as general courses in art and design at all levels, there are Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) and degree courses in interior design, theatre design and display design.

Like other artistic work, this is a very competitive sector. You need to be confident and determined to succeed.
