3 Dimensional Design

‘Good design is a Renaissance attitude that combines technology, cognitive science, human need and beauty to produce something.’ (Paola Antonelli, Museum of Modern Art, New York)
 Auditorium
Designers who work in this sector produce 3 dimensional items, ranging from jewellery and glassware to washing machines; from furniture to kettles or models of bridges. They often use computers to plan the shape and structure of an object before making it in their chosen material. IT skills are essential.

Sculptors produce work for decorative purposes out of their own creative inspiration, using materials such as wood, precious metals, glass or plastics.

Animators digitally produce 3 dimensional models, often for special effects on films.

To work in this sector, you need to be artistic, creative, imaginative and able to think up original ideas. You should have good practical skills with your hands. You should be able to accept criticism of your work – not everyone will like your designs.

It is also helpful to have a good business sense. Most designers and virtually all sculptors are self employed or work freelance. Any periods of employment by organisations are likely to be based on fixed-term projects. You need to be confident and determined to succeed.

There is no single entry route to these jobs. Talent is important, but it is probably best to take a course before looking for a job, or setting up on your own.

You might take a general art and design course. These run at all levels, from National Certificate (NC) or National Qualification (NQ) through Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) to degree and postgraduate.  There are also specialist arts and craft courses at various levels in animation, furniture, jewellery, glass, product design, model making and sculpture.
