Vehicle Body Repair

‘There were wrecks everywhere – wrecks of vehicles everywhere……’ (Charles Early, American author, born 1930)

Every day, motor vehicles are damaged in road traffic accidents. Some of them cannot be repaired and are sent to scrap yards. Others are repaired to look and drive like new.

Vehicle body repairers mend the bodywork of these vehicles. They take out dents and replace body panels that cannot be fixed.

Vehicle spray painters spray paint vehicles to match the rest of the original paintwork, or to some other specified colour and finish.

Body repairers and spray painters might repair either light or heavy vehicles. They usually specialise in either cars and small trucks, or buses, coaches or lorries.

To work in this sector you should be good with your hands and prepared to pay attention to detail. The finished job must be really good! You should be able to work on your own, but also as part of a team.

You might get into this work through a Modern Apprenticeship. You will then learn on the job and study for a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 2 or 3. Entry requirements vary. For some employers you might not need formal qualifications but they might ask for around 3 Standard grades. You should be physically fit. If you want to be a spray painter, you should not have breathing problems, as the fumes may be bad for you.

The number of employees in this sector has increased in the last few years. There are now many more Modern Apprenticeships.
